IP Telephony

IP Telephony and Voice Over IP (VOIP) refer to the transport of voice calls over a data network such as a corporate LAN or WAN or even the Internet. Instead of setting up an end to end circuit for a conversation, IP telephony converts analogue voice into digital information that is then split into small pieces and transmitted across a network to the other end where the process is reversed.

Many people think IP telephony is a recent invention and are surprised to discover that telecommunication carriers have been using the technology in various forms for many years, particularly for international calls.

While there are benefits to deploying IP telephony, the technology is not suited to every organisation. Openet can assist clients to evaluate the various implementations of IP telephony and determine if the technology will benefit the organisation.

Reasons for implementing IP Telephony

  • Reduced infrastructure and call costs compared to traditional PBX technology
  • Deployment and expansion flexibility
  • Simplified cabling infrastructure
  • Advanced call routing capabilities
  • Ability to carry voice traffic over fiber optic networks thereby reducing exposure to lightning related failures
